The recent Siberian-like weather conditions have, as expected, caused chaos for British motorists.

Driving on snow or ice can be perilous and yet only three percent of UK motorists use winter tyres, compared with 50 percent in Germany and 10 percent in the Netherlands.

Andrew Lawrence, CEO of leading insurance provider Questor , said: “During a British winter 48% of accidents are caused by skidding and our research has shown that tyres are also one of the top three reasons people make a claim.

“Many people may choose to rent a car to visit family and friends this holiday season but it’s important that consumers are aware that they are more at risk during the bad weather to damaging their rental vehicle and having to pay out to the car rental company for that damage. The average bill for a damaged rental vehicle is £450 and those renting can often be stung for the full amount if they don’t cover themselves.”

With much of the country braced for more freezing weather conditions before Christmas, Mr Lawrence is urging travellers to check their insurance or ensure they have the correct cover in place before travelling. “Anyone renting a car this Christmas season needs to make sure they’re protected.
