Make Sure You’re Insured if you are going skiing warns Travel Insurer Protectyourbubble.com-
Press Release ...

Released:
15th February 2011
With
February the busiest month for Brits heading off to the slopes, specialist travel
insurer, Protectyourbubble.com,
is warning skiers and snowboarders to make sure they have ski insurance or they
could be faced with a bill of several thousand pounds in the event of an accident.
The
world’s most popular winter sports destinations will see thousands of holidaymakers
from the UK descending on the slopes over the next couple of weeks, leading up
to the half-term break at the end of February. This means the slopes will be more
crowded than at any point in the season so far, increasing the chances of accidents
— so adequate ski insurance is essential.
According
to the Ski Club of Great Britain, one in 100 skiers is likely to be injured during
a typical five-day ski holiday, with this figure rising to 1 in 50 for snowboarders.
The
average winter sports claim is around £500, according
to Protect
Your Bubble, but
suffer an injury such as a serious leg fracture and you could be looking at a
medical bill running into the thousands or tens of thousand of pounds, especially
if you need to be air-lifted off the slopes and transported to a hospital.
To
avoid costly bills, winter sports holidaymakers need to ensure they have travel
insurance and that their travel insurance policy, whether it is single or multi-trip,
has additional cover for winter sports. They also need to make sure their winter
sports insurance is adequate for their trip.
Thrillseekers
who plan to ski off-piste must make sure they
are covered for excursions off the main pistes,
and if they are covered, whether they need to be accompanied by a guide and only
ski off-piste areas designated safe by the resort.
It
is also important to make sure the cover does not just cover injuries to the policyholder,
but also injuries to other people. This is especially important for people planning
to take a ski holiday at peak times when the slopes are crowded, and also for
less experienced skiers who may not be able to react as quickly on the slopes.
If
someone collides on the slopes and it is deemed their fault, then they could be
liable for causing an accident. In these circumstances having personal liability
cover could save a lot of heartache. Lastly, families who are planning a skiing
holiday during the half-term break need to ensure they have adequate cover for
the whole family.
Stephen
Ebbett, director of travel insurer, protectyourbubble.com,
comments: “Anyone heading off on a winter sports holiday without the correct
insurance cover is taking a massive gamble, and it could backfire if they have
an accident on the slopes and are landed with a medical bill for several thousand
pounds.
It’s
just not worth taking the risk, particularly as the slopes are likely to be extremely
crowded over the next few weeks. If you’re properly insured, you can enjoy your
winter holiday safe in the knowledge that if you do injure yourself or someone
else then you are covered.”
