Do you know that the Excess can cost more than the car? This insurance is a great way to save money and have peace of mind when you rent a car - a great selection of policies available

Do you know that it could cost you £500 or more for any damage to your rental car? EVEN IF IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!!

For a low, annual premium, Insurance4carhire.com provides excess insurance protecting the customer against excess charges whenever they rent a car.

Your car rental agreement normally includes cover for Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Theft. However you are still liable for the Excess on CDW and Theft. When a rental car is damaged or stolen, the driver is asked to pay the first portion of the repair or replacement costs. This is known as the Excess.

Insurance4carhire covers you not only for the total amount of Excess for which you are liable if the car is damaged or stolen, but also for damage to the roof and undercarriage of the car, and windows and tyres.

How our Excess Insurance Works - We insure the Policy Holder, not the rental vehicle. Excess is a voluntary insurance. Decline the car rental company's Excess cover at the counter when you collect the car. If the car is damaged or stolen, the car rental company will charge your credit card for the Excess amount and you then claim for reimbursement on your Policy.

insurance4carhire.com car hire excess insurance products can be purchased by residents in Ireland and many other countries.

Question: August 2010: Can you please advise me, does your worldwide insurance policy Cover me for international Collision Damage Waiver (I.C.D.W.) Which will allow me to hire a vehicle abroad without paying The rental companies insurance charges (including rental in the U.S.A.) If so how much is an annual policy? Thanking you in advance.

Reply: Dear Sir, Thank you for your email. We can only cover you annually for the CDW/SLI in the USA and Canada. The policy costs £109 and can be purchased on www.insurance4carhire.com When you hire a car in the USA, you have the choice of taking a rental that is either fully inclusive, or fully exclusive, of car rental insurance.

If you hire a car on an exclusive basis, no car rental insurance is included in the car rental price. In those circumstances, it is necessary to purchase Collision Damage Waiver/Loss Damage Waiver (CDW/LDW) and Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI). CDW/LDW covers damage, loss of use and theft of the rental vehicle, and SLI covers third party liability. These insurances are sold at the car rental counter and cost between US$20 and US$30 per day.

Our USA & Canada policy covers:

  • Supplemental Liability Insurance (Third Party) up to US$ 1 million

  • Collision Damage Waiver/Loss Damage Waiver (CDW/LDW) - covering damage, theft and loss of use of the rental vehicle - up to US $80,000

  • Uninsured Motorist up to US$ 100,000

  • Hit & Run Motorist up to US$100,000

  • Excess if excess is charged (it is generally not charged in the USA)
  • Damage to windows, roof, tyres & wheels and the undercarriage.

If you have taken a rental that is exclusive of car rental insurance, then our Policy will cover you for your car rental insurance requirementsWe do not recommend this Policy for use with Fly Drive programmes (a package that includes a flight and possibly a hotel, with car rental included at minimal or no cost).

Fly Drive programmes are generally structured so that the car rental company makes very little money on the rental, and looks to make its profit from add-ons such as insurance. For that reason, companies which participate in Fly Drive programmes do not always readily accept this insurance.

If you are doing a Fly Drive programme, it would be sensible to contact the car rental company, tell them you can provide your own insurance, and confirm that they will accept it.

some of the Frequently Asked Questions from Insurance4carhire.com

Explain the requirements for Car Rental Insurance? - insurance4carhire has a competitively priced range of policies which cover car rental insurance throughout the world. They cover the car rental insurance requirements in those countries where Excess applies, and in those countries where the renter must purchase CDW (Collision Damage Waiver)/LDW (Loss Damage Waiver)- covering damage, loss of use and Theft of the rental vehicle) and SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) - which covers third party.

Does my car rental agreement already include insurance? - If you are hiring a car in the UK, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the answer is Yes. Your car rental agreement should include cover for: Damage to the rental vehicle - known as CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) or LDW (Loss Damage Waiver), Third Party Liability and Theft.

What is the difference between Excess, Super CDW, Non-Waiver and the Deductible? - Each car rental company uses different terminology, but they all refer to the same thing. When a car is hired, Collision Damage Waiver and Theft cover are included in the car rental price. There is always an Excess (also referred to as Super CDW, Non Waiver or Deductible) on the CDW and Theft portion of the rental agreement. This amount varies according to the car rental company, the location and the size of the vehicle, and can range from £500 - £1,600.

What is the difference between Avis Super CDW, Hertz Super CDW, Europcar Super CDW and Insurance4carhire.com’s policies? - The Avis Super CDW, Hertz Super CDW and Europcar Super CDW (Super CDW is also known as the Excess, Non Waiver or the deductible) generally cover Excess on Damage and Excess on Theft. Damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof is generally excluded. Insurance4carhire covers: Excess on damage, excess on theft and damage to: windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof.

Tell me more about the Excess / Super CDW sold by car rental companies at the counter? -Car rental companies offer their own Excess / Super CDW cover at the counter when you collect the rental vehicle. It is expensive and generally covers you for Excess on damage and Excess on theft. It generally excludes damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof.

Will the car rental company block any money on my credit card when I have your Excess insurance? - Each rental company will have their own policy and procedures on deposits. A number of companies block a sum equal to the Excess on the credit card while others merely take an imprint.

I have a credit card which covers my Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) - do I need your coverage? - You should carefully read the policy that is provided by the credit card company to determine the coverage and make sure it covers the country in which you are renting the vehicle, and whether or not there is an Excess (non-waiver, deductible) on the policy.

What does Excess (also known as Super CDW) mean? - When you hire a car in the UK and Europe, and in other parts of the world such as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, your car rental agreement includes cover for: CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), Third Party Liability and Theft.

Must I take Excess Cover? - No, Excess is a voluntary insurance. You have three choices:

  • You can decline Excess cover. If you do subsequently have damage to the vehicle or it is stolen, you will be liable for the Excess charge.
  • You can purchase the car rental company’s Excess cover, which is sold at the counter when you collect the car. It generally costs between £6 and £12 a day and covers Excess on theft and damage to the vehicle. It generally excludes: damage to the undercarriage and window and tyre damage.
  • You can purchase a policy from Insurance4carhire. Our policies commence at £49 for the Europe Policy and £65 for the Excess Worldwide 31 Policy. They cover you for: Excess on damage to the vehicle, Excess on theft, and damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof.

Why do I need an Insurance4carhire Policy? - In the UK and Europe, and other countries such as Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, the car rental price includes CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), Third Party Liability and Theft. There is almost always an Excess on the CDW and theft, ranging from £500 and £1,600. The car rental company sells Excess cover at the counter, increasingly known as "Super CDW". This Excess cover generally costs between £6 and £12 per day.

What do you mean by annual policy? Can I use it throughout the year? - Our annual policies allow unlimited use in the course of the annual cover period. For example, if you hired a vehicle for 20 days in July, you could also hire another vehicle and be fully covered in September, October, December etc. without the need to buy a new policy.

What age range is covered by your Policies? - Our car rental insurance policies cover those aged 21 to 85. Our Europe 75-85 and Excess Worldwide 75-85 policies cover those aged 75 to 85. All other policies cover those aged between 21 and 74

Explain the 150 kilometre Restriction - It is not valid to rent a car within 150 km of your usual place of residence. For example, you live in London, you cannot rent a vehicle with 150 km of your London home. This restriction does not apply to expatriates. An example would be someone who owns a home in London but whose usual place of residence is in another country.

When that person visits the UK, they can rent a car in London because their usual place of residence is not London, but another country. The restriction also does not apply if your home is separated by the sea from the country you are visiting. For example, residents of the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are covered to rent a car in the United Kingdom, even though they may be renting a car within 150 km of their usual place of residence. See Jubilee replaces Chartis as underwriter on insurance4carhire Europe - November 2011 about this.

Are other people travelling with me covered? - Yes, our policies cover the policyholder, who must always be the person renting the car, and all drivers named on the car rental agreement, up to a maximum of seven.

Is window and tyre damage covered? - Yes! Insurance4carhire policies (in contrast to most of the Excess/Super CDW cover offered at the counter by car rental companies) also cover you for damage to the vehicle’s windows, tyres, the under-carriage and the roof.

What is the definition of Europe? - Europe is defined as: UK, Ireland, Iceland, Europe (all countries west of the Ural mountains - the Urals extend from the northern border of Kazakhstan to the coast of the Artic ocean - including Cyprus - North and South, Croatia, Czech, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Turkey), Islands of the Mediterranean, Morocco, Tunisia, Canary Islands, Madeira and the Azores.

Can I purchase your Excess Policies if I am not a resident of the UK? - Yes, our Excess policies can be purchased by people resident anywhere in the world.

If I purchase an annual Policy, can I upgrade later to a Policy with wider coverage? - No, I regret it is not possible to upgrade from one policy to another.

Do you cover vehicles such as Camper Vans, Caravans and Motor Bikes? - No, we do not cover camper vans, caravans, motor bikes, vintage cars or commercial vehicles. Our Excess policies cover rental cars and people carriers with up to 9 seats, and with a value up to US $100,000.

In which countries is Excess/Super CDW charged? - Countries in which Excess is charged include: the UK, Ireland, Europe, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. It is also charged in parts of the Middle and Far East, the Caribbean and South America. It is sometimes, but not always, charged in Canada and is just starting to be charged in the USA.

In which countries is Excess/Super CDW not charged? - Excess is just starting to be charged in the USA. It is sometimes, but not always, charged in Canada. It is generally charged in the Caribbean, Central and South America.

Explain the requirements for car rental insurance in the USA and Canada? - When you hire a car in the USA and Canada on a .com website, or by walking up to the counter in the USA or Canada, the renter will have the choice of taking a rental that is either inclusive, or exclusive of insurance. The insurance which is required is Collision Damage Waiver / Loss Damage Waiver (covering damage, theft and loss of use of the rental vehicle), and Supplemental Liability Insurance (covering third party). This is offered at the car rental counter and will generally cost between US$20 and US$30 a day. Excess is not generally charged and the renter is generally responsible for damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof.

If you book your US rental in the UK, or on a co.uk website, the car rental agreement will generally include cover for Third Party, Collision Damage Waiver and Theft. Excess is not generally charged in the US, although it is starting to be charged. The renter is usually responsible for damage to windows, tyres, the undercarriage and the roof. Car rental agreements are not standard and it is always necessary to check the details of your rental agreement so that you are clear about the cover that is offered.

What cover is provided by the Combined Worldwide CDW, SLI & Excess Policy? - This policy covers CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) / LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) and SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance) in countries where car rental insurance is not included in the rental price (including in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. It covers Excess charges in those countries where CDW/LDW is included in the rental price and Excess is charged, mainly the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and most parts of the Far East and Asia

What do car rental companies typically charge if you lose the keys to your rental car? - Most car rental companies will charge between £100 and £150 if you lose the keys to the rental car.

What is covered by the Theft insurance included in the car rental price? - The theft insurance provided by the car rental company covers theft of the rental vehicle only. It does not cover your personal effects, which would normally be covered by either your travel insurance or your household insurance. There is generally an Excess on the theft portion of the rental. It is this Excess which is covered by our Annual Excess policies

What is Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and do I need it? - PAI insures the renter (for the duration of the rental) in the event of their accidental death or bodily injury (coverage is 24 hours a day, in or out of the car). The renter's passengers are also covered while entering, occupying or exiting the vehicle. This cover is sold at the counter and costs in the region of £3.95 per day.

What is Personal Effects Cover (PEC) and do I need it? - PEC covers theft and damage to the personal effects of the renter and the renter's accompanying family members, permanently residing in the same household. This protection is effective while travelling or in any hotel or building during a trip with the rented car for the duration of the rental. This cover is sold at the counter and costs in the region of £3.95 per day

How many passengers can I take in my rental car? - You can only have as many passengers as the vehicle has seat belts.

What if I am overcharged or don't get the car group I booked? - Try to deal with the agent at the front desk, and do not hesitate to ask for the manager on duty. It is always easier to resolve a problem there and then. Do not sign anything you have not read and understood. You have 24 hours from the time you signed the rental agreement to CHANGE your mind if you feel that you were made to sign or buy something you do not need.

About Insurance4carhire

Founded in 2002 by Larry Ursich, Insurance4carhire is an innovative internet insurance company whose core business is the provision of car rental Excess insurance. For 10 years, Larry ran his own car rental broking company, working closely with Dollar and Budget. After noting the high costs being charged by the car rental companies for Excess cover, Larry decided to develop a better alternative: annual car rental Excess insurance products offering customers convenience, peace of mind and very significant savings. The business has grown rapidly and now offers products to cover Europe, US/Canada, Worldwide, Family & Partners and for 75-85 year olds.

This organic growth has been achieved through providing exceptional value for money and high standards of customer service and endorsements in mainstream newspapers has been the cornerstone to growth. Most of our customers renew year on year, and referrals from our customers to their family and friends account for a large proportion of our business. What’s more, the travel and motoring press have been consistent in their praise and recommendation of our policies.

In 2005, for the second year running, we received the accolade of “World’s Leading Innovative Ecommerce Travel Product” from The World Travel Awards. These annual awards celebrate achievement in the travel industry and are based on votes cast by travel industry professionals throughout Europe
