The responses reveal a number of intriguing and humorous insights such as the most popular celebrity in a break-down situation and the worst driving partner. When asked who they would most like to pick them up when broken down, perhaps unsurprisingly, the most popular choice was a handy mechanic. A similarly sensible suggestion was Jeremy Clarkson, famed for his motoring now-how, who proved the second most popular. Some of the more interesting choices ranged from Jesus to Superman, Dame Edna Everage to Elvis, and from Archbishop Desmond Tutu to Mr Bean, giving a truly eclectic mix of potential celebrity passengers.

The men in the survey sample must have been a particularly down to earth, caring and sensitive bunch, with ‘my wife’ or ‘my girlfriend’ topping the females chosen, beating Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz. Although, one man’s dream rescuers consisted of the Swedish women’s volleyball team, and another was slightly less fussy, stating that ‘any good looking female’ would do for him.

In star contrast, most women had no qualms about dumping their other half for a celebrity pin-up - compared to the substantial number of men who replied that they would li e their wife to pic them up, just one woman chose her husband! For the driving, day dreaming ladies however, meeting the celebrity of their dreams was far more important than getting bac on the road. George Clooney was the most popular holiday hun , who received 50% more nominations than fellow heart-throb Brad Pitt. US President Barrack Obama was close behind Mr Clooney, and Formula 1 stars Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton proved popular choices for stranded female motorists wanting to be zoomed off to their destination.

By far the most unpopular driving partner was Prime Minister Gordon Brown, apparently paying for his recent political unpopularity. Mother-in-laws were second in the survey, proving as unpopular as ever to son-in-laws across the UK. Interestingly, despite being the favourite celebrity to rescue stranded motorists, Jeremy Clarkson was a close third in the worst driving partner stakes. Perhaps after getting cars back into top gear, he shouldn’t expect an invite for the rest of the journey. Other nightmare passengers include MPs, mothers, chatterboxes and back -seat drivers. Bosses and work colleagues also featured highly, as did high profile stars including Jonathan Ross, Michael Winner and Jordan.

Maybe one day a car hirer out there will be lucky enough to be rescued by George Clooney or Angelina Jolie from their break -down peril.
